“I did an oopsie.” 

Clockwork paused in his work, gaze turning from his work towards his ghostling (it didn’t matter if he was an adult, he’d always be his ghostling) who was smiling nervously, avoiding his eyes. 

“Oh?” He kept his tone light, even as he worked on untangling a time knot. Honestly at least Danny was immune to any effect of time, even if he couldn’t look into his timelines in exchange. It came with being the other half of Infinity. 

“Yeeah… you know that corner of the multiverse you told me not to go to because you’re working on some time problems? I might have stumbled into one of the worlds in the corner…” 

He stopped his machinations, fully turning towards Danny- Space, his Core whispered and quivered in utter delight at having an Equal in power- with a raised eyebrow, leaning on his staff and silently telling him to explain. 

Danny poked his fingers together, giving a nervous laugh. “So uh, I was just exploring right? Well me and Ellie, you know how she gets when she can’t wander, and um… I er, we might have messed with some things in the creation of it… I didn’t know it was part of that universe, I swear! It was so far at the fringes and halfway into the Zone and I couldn’t just let a universe die before it began and-”

Oh- Oh! His ghostling (and his grand-ghostlings it sounded like) had claimed his first universe! He could put off these time knots, this was a grand milestone for any Ancient, nevermind such a primordial force as one of theirs.

And this is how a DC world came into being with humans evolving with more avian traits. Like wings. And claws. Look, Dan thought it’d be funny if they gave baby humanity wings and Ellie started rambling about how much farther they could travel if they had them and Danny thought it could be cool. Oh well, time to keep an eye on their itty baby world now…

I can't imagine the times that Effie had to care for a drunken Haymitch; making sure that he's not choking on his own vomit in a blacked out stooper, bringing him water and painkillers for the constant hangovers, dealing with his rude outbursts and having to learn to not take them to heart. All the times, she's probably held his hair while he's puking into the toilet bowl, trying to reassure him that she does this for her girlfriends all the time.

Maybe even whispering to him that he's not a burden when she knows he might feel that way. Or perhaps she always kept her distance, but it's hard to imagine that 20 something years didn't lead to at least one night of her taking care of him, even if out of pity or the need for him to get it together for his tributes. Haymitch tried to hug her during the reaping, for Christ's sake. Sure, he was drunk, but if he hated her or was truly annoyed with her, I can't imagine he'd want to touch her at all.

The parallels between the tributes being treated as pets in SOTR and Katniss referring to her prep team as pets in THG. Both sides are encouraged to see each other as fundamentally less than human, because that makes it easier to accept the inhuman treatment they're a part of. Katniss eventually starts to see Capitol citizens as people (and acknowledges that it was fucked up to think of them as animals), but then there's Gale who doesn't understand why she'd be empathetic towards their oppressors. If everyone in the Capitol was evil or subhuman, it would make the whole situation so much cleaner. That's how Gale sees it, that's why he's okay with just bombing them all. Still, in order to make a lasting peace, it can't just be a question of identifying the people who deserve to be punished. The power of rulers like Snow and Coin is that they cut groups of people off from one another, and then say that it's acceptable to hate and kill the people in other groups because they're not really human. Most of the people who let the Games happen were not individual monsters, but they collectively supported something monstrous. Now they need to reckon with that, and no matter what it's going to hurt.

Sunrise on the Reaping just further cements to me the brilliance of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as well because everything comes back to it. It is the start of it. You can tie everything in the whole series back to it, and I'm specifically talking about the human nature question: Are humans inherently good or evil?

Now, Sunrise on the Reaping talks about propaganda, and while it had plenty of messages in its own right, if you apply it to that human nature question, it adds even more.

The people in the Capital have been shaped by the propaganda and outer forces to believe that the Hunger Games, this evil thing, is right. They wouldn't think this inherently and without this propaganda.

Think of Effie who is completely manipulated by the propaganda. She says to Haymitch that the games are necessary, but she also tries to be good to him. She isn't inherently "evil." She is shaped by the world around her like everyone in the Capital and the districts alike.

Human nature isn't inherently evil. Our natural state isn't to be monsters. Outside factors can make us "evil," and propaganda is one of those ways we are shaped.

What do you do when you almost die in space? Leonov drew the orbital sunrise.

Alexei Leonov was the first person to walk in space. When he couldn’t sleep after pressurisation in his suit meant he almost couldn’t get back into the capsule, Leonov picked up his sketchpad and pencils to create the first art in space.

‘A curved band mixing black and blue represents the portion of Earth visible due to the rising sun. Above the planet, a narrow curvature of red, then yellow, and then the black of space. And in the center of the drawing, we see the red sphere of the sun, almost risen behind the curvature of the Earth. It says something to me that the first art made by humans from outside of Earth's atmosphere depicts Earth's atmosphere.

Leonov was astonished by the brightness of the stars from space, but he did not draw that, nor did he draw himself floating, looking up at the spaceship. He drew home. He drew what Mary Oliver memorably called "this, the one world we all belong to."’ (Green, 2021)

Though we see the orbital sunrise in a more photorealistic way now (NASA, 2021), Leonov’s shows what it might feel like. The awe to see all of humanity’s history in one place, all humans who had ever existed except himself and his team.

‘I like to look at Leonov's drawing when I am exhausted by despair and drudgery, or when I feel the weight of longing and fear pressing in on my chest.

I look at the picture and think of all that had to happen for the drawing to exist, for Leonov to exist, for anything to exist. I look at the drawing and take a long, slow breath, and think of how my lungs were made for this air.’

I keep thinking about the fact they aired the moment with the berries in Katinss' games while censoring almost everything in Haymiche's.

With how much better the technology was 24 years later, I have no doubt they could do what they did and much more.

But, I don't think they wanted to.

First of all, what Katniss and Peeta did was a more subtle rebellion that the Capitol could spin exactly how they wanted to; star-crossed lovers, love crazed teenagers.

The real change, in my opinion, is that the Capitol actually forgot what the Games were supposed to be. The head Game maker, Seneca Crane, if we're going by the movie canon, actually believed the idea the Games were just entertainment. I have no doubt they aired the Games with a five minute delay like the Reapings. But Crane didn't want to change the story that was playing out. Like the rest of the Capitol, he thought it was peak entertainment.

That's why Snow had him killed. Because Snow still remembered what the games were for. He actually understood what the berries symbolized.

But, the people of the Districts still remembered the truth.

The Louella/Lou Lou switch did not in itself bother me, but I don't think the way the Capitol went about this was realistic. Their behaviour was not guided by what I expect a totalitarian regime to do, but what they had to do to follow the author's propaganda theme.

A realistic Capitol would have twisted Louella's death to be the fault of the Districts. They would have used the parade as a reason to warrant reaping another tribute from District 12 and done it as publicly and painfully as possible. Of course they will do everything to keep the tributes from killing themselves (forcefield around the rooftop), but imagine the pressure they could place on a tribute: If you kill yourself, it's your fault that another kid from your District gets reaped.

Others have said it already, but this was a book about historical revisionism and not propaganda. The reaping in 12 was fine. Louella isn't actually dead. The Games happened differently. While I appreciate the Orwellian references (Ministry of Truth), I think elements of propaganda could have been displayed far better had the Capitol kept to the truth but twisted its interpretation, not the actual events themselves.

Because the point of Orwell's 2+2=5 was never to replace a 2 with a 3, but to see both 2s and earnestly believe the result to be 5. It was never deception, but a different interpretation from reality.

Because if we apply the Capitol's mindset from the 50th, Katniss' Games couldn't have happened. No volunteering. No mourning Rue. No berry scene. But we know they happened, because people clearly remember them when referencing these events in Mockingjay! The Capitol had simply done the most to have its citizens interpret the events differently—not to hide them away.

changeling danny has his wretched little claws in me so here's some AU fey lore

Okay so, i've got a lot of ideas for the Fey Lore in this au. But to start out what may become a sling of posts: a simplified set up of the Infinite Realms. I think I mentioned it before in a reblog of the original changeling danny post, but the fey wilds exist in the IR. In most fanon I see the same scale as the rest of the realms, however i have a different idea for it.

In simplified terms, the fey wilds and the ghost zone are two different things. They both exist in the Infinite Realms, however, they exist on different planes of existence. In simplified terms, there are three separate planes in the Infinite Realms.

The Long Far: Highest realm in the infinite realms. Home to most, if not all, the Ancients. Beings that reside in The Long Far are eldritch abominations, gods, personifications of concepts, and other celestial-type beings. The only way to access the Long Far is through the Starflare Currents in the Feywilds. Which are a nebula of stars that work similar to the ocean currents in Finding Nemo. They are a rapid vortex full of stars that pass over the feywilds that can be seen at night. In order to reach the Long Far, one must fly up to the Current and latch onto one of the stars rapidly flying past. And then they must stay on the star until the currents begin to ascend rapidly upwards. This is harder than it sounds. Ever been indoor surfing? Where you lie on your stomach on a small board and try not to get flung off? Exact same concept. It’s basically the world’s most terrifying escalator to the gods.

The Fey Wilds: The Fey Wilds isn't exactly strictly home to the Fey, however for convenience sake I'm calling it the Fey Wilds. This is the home to fey and other folklore and mythological creatures that may not want to reside in the Ghost Zone. There are no Fey in the GZ. It's not that they hate being down there, but. well.. they hate being down there. They think the place is ugly. The Fey Wilds has ever shifting, expanding amount of biomes. These biomes range from massive redwood forests, to swamps, to essentially Pandora from Avatar. The place can look almost entirely human one moment, and then like a different planet the next. Fey and other inhabitants know how to navigate this easily -- but ghosts? Not so much. There are currently two known ways to reach the Fey Wilds from the Ghost Zone and vice versa: Lake Portals, and Cave Tunnels. Which I will expand upon in a moment.

Ghost Zone: Exactly how it sounds! The Ghost Zone is, well, the ghost zone! It's essentially the same as canon. Same looks, same everything. This is the home of mortal souls and the occasional mythological creature or two, as well as weaker concept spirits. By that I mean like, ecto-octopi. Concept spirits can manifest in both the GZ and Feywilds. Ghosts tend to stick inside the Ghost Zone and avoid venturing into the Fey Wilds because, well, they're still mortal souls. They're gonna get jumped by a fey looking for a new decoration or a new pet/servant/whatever. Best to honestly avoid the fey wilds as a whole.

Now, I just mentioned that there were two known ways to reach the Fey Wilds from the Ghost Zone: lake portals and cave tunnels. I made goofy little visual aides which I will attach below, and then I will explain how they work.

I'll start with the Lake Portals. They are, well, as the name suggests lake portals. Not every lake in the fey wild is a portal to the ghost zone, and vice versa. They're rather uncommon to find in both planes, but it's not like they're hard to recognize.

In the Fey Wilds, lake portals will have a sheen over the water like an oil spill. But instead of the regular rainbow-y colors, it will instead have the ghost zone's colors swirling in it; green and purple. The water will have that sickly green tint to it, and have a slight glow. The plant life surrounding the water are not typically what you'd find in the Fey Wilds, but might in the Ghost Zone. They look different from the regular noxious swamp bogs in the wilds, so its easy to tell that they're lake portals.

In the Ghost Zone, the lake portals will instead be shimmery and blue like a tropical ocean. And just like how there are GZ plants in the fey wilds surrounding the water, there's fey wild plants on the island where the lake is.

How these portals work is rather simple. You dive in and begin swimming down. It's a long swim down, but that's all you gotta do. It will get dark, as there are no plant life in these portals, and no aquatic life either.

It starts getting complicated when you reach what I like to call the border. The border is as the name implies; its a border between the planes. In the lakes it's not physical, however you will feel when you've reached the border and crossed it. Intense vertigo washes over you as your sense of gravity begins to shift and flip; up is becoming down, down is becoming up.

Your goal at this point is to try and push through that vertigo and discomfort and make it to the other side of the border, without getting flipped upside down and swimming back to the surface you came from. This is harder than it sounds as you become dizzy underwater, and since there's no light anywhere, you will try and instinctively seek it out and follow it. You're down too deep to know where that light is.

Once you've reached the other end of the border successfully, your gravity will have flipped without you needing to do anything. You are now swimming up to the surface, and once you do, boom! You're in the ghost zone! Lake Portals are faster to use than tunnels, but very disorientating.

Now cave tunnels are longer, but simpler. Essentially some caves have tunnels that lead into the ghost zone, similar to how in greek mythology there are random entrances to the underworld in the mortal world. I haven't exactly figured out what the tell is for when you're in a tunnel leading to the Ghost Zone, but I know that when it's the other way around it's rather easy -- as you start to climb up.

It's a less complicated explanation: essentially you are descending into the ghost zone through this tunnel. You are on your way down like Orpheus in search of his wife, or like Heracles doing his twelve labors. It can get claustrophobic and of course there is the border.

Unlike experiencing a shift in gravity, you're instead hit with the intense vertigo and an intrinsic fear to turn around. It's an instinctual response to your surroundings changing on a molecular level, and your body in response is telling you to Flee. Basically, you've taken a rip of the Cave Gasses and you feel like you're losing your mind. Once you exit the border its smooth sailing.

Sometimes you get unlucky and there's a Pit Drop and you're suddenly Alice in Wonderlanding your way down to the Ghost Zone. But hey! At least you're not swimming.

those are currently the only two ways i've come up with for traveling between the GZ and Fey Wilds. But all in all, it's meant to be very disorientating stuff; vertigo and nausea-inducing, with just a dash of Existentially Terrifying. Traveling between planes usually is.

I can't stop thinking about how brilliant and cruel Snow was by sending Haymitch the milk jug in the arena.

If it was poisoned and he gave it away, it would look like he poisoned it to get rid of his competition. If it was poisoned and he drank it it would look like suicide. If it wasn't poisoned, and he drank it he would look like a selfish asshole only pretending to care about his partner.

It might have not been poisoned, but Haymitch can't feed it to someone else knowing that it could be. No matter what he does, he loses. There is no good answer. The fact that he was interrupted was the only saving grace here because any choice he made would have played into Snow's hand.
